29 Jan

If you haven’t heard Superbowl XLVII is this sunday, it’s San Francisco 49ers versus Baltimore Ravens and the half-time show is Beyonce! Unknown

I like football, but like many of the game watchers this Sunday I will be viewing mostly for the great funny commercials and the food at the party…Oh and being a Clevelander, I do have to “boo” the Ravens.  So today, i am sharing a couple of my own appetizer recipes for you to enjoy while watching the game or the commercials 😉

Valentine’s Day Date: What to wear?

28 Jan

Valentine’s day is approaching soon and do you celebrate this day with your sweetie? My husband and I use to exchange gifts and go out to dinner to celebrate. In fact, we got engaged at our favorite restaurant on a Valentine’s day date long, long ago! But now that we have kids, the celebration tends to be more about our family. However, this year we are doing a date night!  We have reservations at a cute local restaurant, Vaccarro’s Trattoria (If you are in the Cleveland, Ohio area…you can check them out on open table…YUM!)  So what to wear for the date?  I thought some of you may also be doing something for valentine’s day so here are some made in the USA options from MiUS Collection:

Red wine & Roses

Red wine & Roses

I’m in love with the peplum dress above as it a super flattering fit and the price is just right…$49.99 will get you this gorgeous dress.   I have featured this dress in a previous post about celebrity styling take a read for style ideas.   The style is available at MiUS in curvy sizes too.

The sequin jacket adds a little bling (just in case i get chilly) since I am in Ohio weather!   The earrings and wristlet are just fun accessories to finish off the look.

Oh…and don’t forget we are running month-long GIVEAWAY for a chance to win a $50 gift certificate. (Winner will be announced on 2/15/13)

buy USA…what does it mean to you?

24 Jan

at MiUS we obviously believe in supporting designers and manufactures of women’s clothing and accessories here in the united states.  hence the “Made In The United States” collection.  but what does “buy USA” mean to you?  i think to all of us it could mean something different.  we are such a global world now, its hard to determine sometimes what is made here and what isn’t.  for instance…i drive a honda.  but from what i could gather, most of the money i spent on it went right back to the good old USA because it was made here.  i am quite sure that “buy USA” could cause a debate like every other issue we face right now.  but this blog post isn’t about a debate.  it is about how my family tries to support the “buy USA” movement.

some made in the USA items cost a lot more money than stuff manufactured out of the country.  sadly, sometimes i have to look at price before i look at where a product has come from.  i can’t believe anyone else is that far off.  i assume the middle class buyer has to look for the best deals.  so instead, we are sure to buy from local and independently owned establishments whenever possible, over the big box stores.  i won’t lie…we go to target and walmart and home depot when we don’t have another option, but we try to hang at the local joints.  below are some of our favs around town… some of them might actually know who we are at this point!

these are two bar/restaurant establishments very close to our house.  so close that when we first moved here, i thought the moose head was going to give us a permanent table.

IMG_3281

if you are from this area…i do not have to tell you what this next place serves….if you aren’t, this is a local ice cream and chocolate establishment.

IMG_3279

this place has changed hands a few times…but it is a great take out joint (they have seats too…but with three kids and one that has a food allergy, we tend to just get take out.)

IMG_3344

when you need propane filled (which is often for us) or a question about an insect that you are sure is a termite (but they know when you walk in the door with a bug in a baggie its just a flying ant) (true story)  you go here:

IMG_3343

another familiar family name if you are from these parts.  if not, get your donuts here (and other baked goods and deli needs)

IMG_3278

this is a new but old place.  it used to be a take out sandwich shop, but they moved into a restaurant location and have really good food.  during christmas they made friends with my husband.  while i love to cook…the holidays overwhelm me so we get take out (a lot obviously):

IMG_3340

i love where we live.  its a small town with a lot of “mom and pop” owned shops and restaurants.  i like the smallness of it.  to me…that is “buy USA”

wiSww (what i SHOULD wear wednesday)

23 Jan

well…since we went from 60 to sub zero in i don’t know how many days…everyone here is sick.  so, i will be honest, i have been in my pjs for a stint of time.  but today i have a furnace guy coming over so i should get dressed.  what should i wear when i am home-bound with 2 or 3 sick kids?  i am linking up with lindsey at the pleated poppy for what i wore wednesday.

in keeping with my style on a budget, here is some lounge wear that i would have on in case someone came to the door…but i can chill in it all day snuggled up on the couch watching movies with the kiddos.  and…its all made right here in the good old USA

Hearts Long Sleeve Tee

a nice and soft and comfy t-shirt.  long sleeve of course because baby its cold outside!

hearts long sleeve T  $24.99

Foldover Pants -

how comfy do these fold over pants ($24.99) look for a not -feeling- so- good kind of day?

Black Snood - Infinite Scarf - Shawl - Hood and because i am often cold…i would toss on the black snood.  personally, i have gray and purple and wear them around my house as scarves or shawls all.the.time.  i am always cold. ($32.99)

since i am just laying around the house…i wouldn’t put any jewelry on.  but let’s be honest…the probability of me having decent looking hair on such days, slim to none.  so my other accessory would be a hat.

Beret

this beret is perfect ($29.99).  i look funny in baseball hats, so i gravitate towards these instead.  plus they give you a more put together look (even when you are NOT!)

check out the MiUS Collection website for these and other great fashion made in the USA.  also…while you are there…check out our daily deals always popping up…

happy wednesday!

What is Eco-fashion? & Giveaway info

22 Jan

Image

We have a boutique in the MiUS Collection for Eco-fashion.  The question was asked…“What is eco-fashion?”  So I thought we could answer this question on the blog as others may want to know as well…

At MiUS, we believe in bringing made in the USA fashions from American workers paid at fair wages and in safe working conditions.  This effort, ultimately, produces a smaller carbon footprint as we are not transporting goods across the world to be sold in the United States.  However, Eco-fashion is more than taking into account the working conditions of people in the fashion industry and its socio-economic impact in our neighborhoods.  Eco-fashion also relates to the environment, the health of consumers and materials used.  In general, Eco-fashion follows these principles:

  • are often made from recycled and reused textiles. High-quality garments can be made from second-hand clothes and even recycled plastic bottles.
  • are made using organic raw materials (i.e. such as cotton grown without pesticides and silk made by worms fed on organic trees)
  • don’t involve the use of harmful chemicals and bleaches to color fabrics
  • come from fair trade  – the people who make them are paid a fair price and have decent working conditions.

According to Ecouterre’s (an online eco-fashion source):

Clothing uses more water than any other industry besides agriculture. Conventional cotton, which is grown in more than 70 countries and comprises almost 50 percent of textiles worldwide, also happens to be the most toxic crop in the world. Roughly $2 billion of hazardous chemical pesticides are released into the air every year, accounting for 16 percent of global insecticides—more than any other agricultural crop.  The World Health Organization estimates that at least 3 million people are poisoned by pesticides every year, resulting in 220,000 deaths worldwide annually. In rural communities, where poverty prevents farm workers from taking the necessary precautions, miscarriages, premature births, and sickly children are ubiquitous.

To put the highlighted statement above into context, it takes approximately a third of a pound of synthetic fertilizers and pesticides to grow enough cotton for a T-shirt.  That statement brings some tough questions that as consumers, we must ask ourselves…”What is the true cost of our clothing?”  What are your thoughts?

“I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: ‘We hold these truths to be self-evident that all men are created equal.’… I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character. I have a dream today.” I Have A Dream, 1963

pot roast and family fun night

18 Jan

i mentioned earlier this week that i love me some crock pot meals.  this is a family favorite around here.  pot roast.  it was a sunday, so we incorporated some family fun by getting a rocket that had to be put together for us to color and play in.

first up, the roast.  i think i read this “recipe” in a martha magazine but i am not sure.  we make it often enough in the winter, i just “know” it now.  but it is good!  we make mashed potatoes to go with it.

get yourself a roast

1 Tbl corn starch

salt/pepper

8 medium carrots peeled and cut into inch-ish pieces

2 medium onions quartered (unless you like to eat the onions…then cut them up to your liking)

2 Tbl Worcestershire

stir cornstarch and 2 Tbl of cold water until smooth.  put it in the bottom of the crock pot.  add carrots, onions and salt and pepper and toss in the cornstarch mixture.  salt and pepper the beef and put it on top of the veggies.  drizzle the top of the roast with Worcestershire sauce and cook.  high 6 hrs…or put it on for low most of the day like i do.

its yummy!

these kids are excited about the after dinner fun to come…

but first, dinner.

time for rocket fun…

yes…the walls are not complete in our basement…but my kids love basements.  so we still play down there.  someday it will all be complete.

this was a fun family activity because we all could partake in it.  sometimes when we try to play board games or do puzzles…a certain little boy starts to get a bit bored and begins to throw things.  if he tosses this rocket, we will have trouble!

have a super fab weekend!!!
