memory keeping and a “carrie-ism”

4 Mar

things around here haven’t been that exciting..

see what i mean?  thankfully the oldest goes to school so we don’t bore her as much.  so onto the memory keeping and the carrie-ism.

many moons ago, a friend of mine told me that “SH!T the bed” was a “carrie-ism” (not sure of the blog etiquette on swearing so i cleaned it up a bit with an exclamation point).  i assume the reason that was a “carrie-ism” is because i say it often…well not as often anymore because it isn’t the best thing to say in front of the kids…but if i don’t say it, it still crosses my mind.  which brings me to memory keeping and my carrie-ism (it all ties in eventually).  i am getting ready to go to a crop this weekend.  for those of you not savvy in the scrapbook world…a crop is an outing for a bunch of ladies doing a bunch of scrapbooking (which i like to call memory keeping because i am not great with the traditional scrapbooking craftiness).  i haven’t been to a crop in a little over a year.  i was pretty sure i had a bunch of photos ready to go.  i do project life books by becky higgins.   i love becky higgins…and you should too, if you don’t have time to do traditional scrapbooks but want a little more flair than just a photo album.  and even though i try to embrace technology…i still like to feel the photos and the paper.  anyway…i was pretty sure i could just pop some photos into my books so i can do the crafty and journaling part at the crop.  i mean, i have some catching up to do..seriously.  here is where i left off in my youngest’s first year book:

yup…that’s christmas 2010.  he was born in october 2010.  scrapbook much?  well i got out the two boxes of photos and out pops the carrie-ism when i realize i haven’t even opened the envelopes!

oh lord.

SH!T the bed.

(as a side note…my oldest can read…and is standing over my shoulder trying to tell me i spelled something wrong…yup….i spelled SH!T wrong…and no…she didn’t say the word, she doesn’t know it…but she is trying to sound it out.  now she is reading the sentence i just wrote.  this kid needs to find something to do. back to the point)

i have less than a week to go through these.  i got project life because i thought it would be easy to keep up with.  i have a book per child.  i wasn’t really even doing a spread a month…i was just doing important or special times.  vacations.  school stuff.  i have no clue how people keep up…or even are only a year behind.  the only thing i could think to do is start piles.  so i split them up into a pile per child and a pile of “i think these go with everyone but i have no clue”

that red sticking out in each pile…is 2010’s christmas card and the baby announcement.  SH!T the bed.

i brought a folding table up from the basement…on the way up i was asked by four humans “what are you doing with that table?”  my answer?  “putting photos on it and if you touch it we will have BIG problems”  i am nice like that.

so i got them separated into piles.  should we place bets on how frustrating the next part will be?  trying to remember the order events occurred?  oh…it shouldn’t be hard you say?  the dates should be on the back of the photo you say?  oh yes..there is a date…march 2, 2014.  that was the day they were all printed at shutterfly.  that date doesn’t help me.

keep your fingers crossed…i have lofty goals this week.  i put the table in the family room hoping i could get a little done while hanging with the kids or hanging with the husband or keeping up with my shows.  not soaps by the way!  haha…think our mother’s generation called “soaps” “shows”  ….i am all over the place today no?

do you do project life?  i really am a big fan.  sometimes i wonder though if i should of done  a digital book for each child yearly and a project life book for our family?  i think that is the goal when the project life books are done.  the girls books are much further along so i can’t really stop now.  but its hard to decide how to “keep” memories…is there a right answer?!

SH!T the bed.  hahahaha.

have a great week!

the post holiday funk

4 Jan

the holidays.  they have come and gone already.  i never realized, until i had children, how fast they really go.  i always start off the holiday super excited.  i set the table pretty for thanksgiving brunch (dinner isn’t at my house).  i try to have my cards, and most gifts, purchased by thanksgiving so that i can enjoy that month between the turkey and the ham.  i look forward to the snow and the christmas lights.  the tree (real or fake) being lit.  the magic that we all kind of believe in around that time of year.  the planning and figuring out exactly what gifts the kids want from us and the big guy in red.

2012 december daily  obviously a couple more beds…kidding.  what can i say…sometimes they can’t get enough of each other   i look forward to the ornament making and the baking and the napping that goes on in a relaxed sort of way that winter brings.

2012 december daily1

2012 december daily4

the making of a hello kitty gingerbread house while i made the cranberry sauce.  and watching that house sit unfinished until it sat in the garbage can.  it was a short lived fun haha.

2012 december daily2

watching the kiddos play outside in the snow with their dad that very first day there is enough to play with.

2012 december daily3

and then all of a sudden the turkey is a forgotten taste and its almost time for the ham (well the ham is on christmas day at my in-laws…around here it was prime rib for christmas eve).  its time for dinner and church and unwrapping of gifts and goofing off with the cousins…

2012 december daily6

2012 december daily5

then, very quickly, christmas eve comes to an end.  its time to feed the reindeer in our new christmas jammies outside.

2012 december daily7

then its here.  just like that.  santa comes, our elf travels back to the north pole, and christmas morning is done in a blink of the eye.

2012 december daily8

i am really good there for a while.  then the 26th comes and it looks like santa crashed into my house.  nothing is contained under the tree anymore.  its all over the house and i have to find a place for it.  and as soon as i find a place for the new barbie, the new lego set is back out.  then all those decorations i love seem to be taking over.  and its time to clean up.  this year i longed for flat spaces with nothing on them.  we took our tree down on new year’s day.  i am okay with it all being down and cleaned up.  like that fresh start to the new year i love.  but that holiday funk takes a few days for me to get rid of.  its like a pull of wanting to stay in the magic of christmas and wanting the break from school to last longer verse wanting the house neat and tidy again and a routine back in place.  yesterday morning my oldest went back to school.  i teared up as she stopped outside the van and looked at me and gave me a wave.  normally she marches her little self right into the building with out looking back.  i was so sad when she waved…made me want to rewind a few weeks to have her home again like when she was little.  as i drove away, my preschooler talked about how she couldn’t wait to get to school and what she was going to do when she got there.  that made me smile.  she, like me, thrives on a routine.  then my baby (okay he is two) and i ran an errand, picked up the house, played a little, then picked up the preschooler, picked up the kindergartner and life was back to normal.  the funk is gone…until next year.

Happy New Years! Resolutions by Millie and Carrie

31 Dec

Your friends at MiUS Collection would like to wish you a glorious, rewarding and productive new year!!

Around the MiUS office, this time means a chance at a new beginning.  For the past 10 years or so, Carrie and I have been sharing our new years resolutions at the beginning of the year…This year we thought we would also share them with you and perhaps make us more accountable for our resolutions!  So this post is composed by both Carrie and myself and we will include goals, comments and thoughts from both of us.  Feel free to join our crazy adventure and post your own goals, ideas, comments or feedback.

First, some timeless advice from the Transcendentalist writer and thinker – Ralph Waldo Emerson:

“You have done what you could—some blunders and absurdities have crept in. Forget them as soon as you can. Tomorrow is a new day. You shall begin it serenely and with too high a spirit to be encumbered with your old nonsense.”

It is with this sage advice in mind that we share some of my new years resolutions to help welcome a new year with a fresh start:

1. Continue the challenge to declutter and organize – Last year I joined a 52-weeks to declutter challenge on Facebook. Although it was fun, I did not complete all the tasks each week.  So this year…I would like to again give it a try!  I will share a link and information on this challenge at a later posts if you like to join me on this!

2. Get fit – this has been one of my resolutions forever, it is a continuous challenge for me, so this year. I am setting actual weight and date goals.  If you want to get fit with me join me on MyFitnessPal (Millie756) and we can share war stories and encourage each other as a community!

3. Spend more time doing activities with kids – The busier life gets the more this resolution seems ever more important.  I have two cute little ones that are growing up so fast, and I want to enjoy every moment.    It is a must for me to carve out time to spend one-on-one with my children.

4.  Continue to build on my marriage – ok a bit too personal…but i’ve been with my husband now almost 14 years, and those of you in any long term relationship know that it is continual work to keep the spark.  My sister follows a daily devotional food for your marriage…i am joining her on that program this year.  If you are interested, email me I will give you more details 😉

5.  Grow MiUS Collection – As a start up, 2012 was a challenging, yet a promising year for MiUS, I would like to make 2013 even better.  I am working on many product introductions, marketing promos, and other fun stuff.  If you have ideas or thoughts about how we can make our store even better contact us – or

6. Continue in my commitment to buy local products and made in the USA goods.  Every dollar spent locally means more jobs for our economy…Want to join my efforts…take the challenge with USA Made Challenge blog or

Ok…Carrie is next…

my turn, my turn!  as millie said we have been doing this for a while.  but we did always keep them very private and just between the two of us.  that might be why we (ahem) don’t always stick with them.  we also tend to have similar resolutions…which makes it fun to keep up with each other.  the “new year” might be my favorite holiday.  i try real hard to start the 2nd (i mean come on, the first we just lay around and eat pork) with everything purged and ready for the new year.  i have spent the last four days cleaning and purging and making garbage and donation piles.  i ordered a new planner (no comments from those of you who know me well) and am ready to roll!

2013 resolutions

1. make more time for “play” with my kids.  we do a lot together and i am home with them all day, but i am not always the mommy who gets down and plays with them for long periods of time.

2. simplify.  this is something i have been working on over the course of november and december and hope to be fully there by january.  i tend to over-analyze, over-think and over-organize.  this year i intend on keeping it simple in order to fit more in.  see #1.

3. make the MiUS blog grow.  i really believe in millie’s idea and mission with the store.  and i want to be a part of it anyway i can.  i also know that the next few years will be the last ones i will be able to be home 100% of the time.  i so would love MiUS to be my part time job:)

4. be kind to everyone i meet…even if i am pretty sure i won’t be friends with everyone i meet.

5. listen more and talk less – sounds easy but man alive i am a talker!!!  haha.

6. get fit and healthy.  when i was young i spent most of my working days at the YMCA.  i used to crack up at how many people showed up the first of the year…and then slowly the numbers came down by march. however, my close in age kids and my life have left me feeling a little too curvy for my liking.  i would like to get back in shape, in a healthy way this year.  a way that works for me and i can stick with.  i like to be realistic about these things.

So…those are the 2013 resolutions for millie and carrie… Feel free to join our crazy adventure and post your own goals, ideas, comments or feedback. What are your resolutions?

have a safe and happy new year’s eve!  be sure to check back with us once the new year is in swing…there is always something brewing at MiUS!

december daily mini scrapbook

21 Dec

i am still linked up with heather from twigs, twine + thyme and working on little handmade and homemade projects every day.  i just sometimes forget to actually do the link:)  on monday i made snickerdoodles:

on tuesday i made chocolate crinkles:

and throughout the month of december i have been working on my mini book that is an idea from ali edwards.  i will warn you, mine comes so close to competing with hers that i will likely have to start my own blog (do you hear the joking in my written words?  if you can’t you will shortly be able to see for yourself).

i have taken a picture almost every day and haven’t done too much journel-ing.  i even messed up a date which is pretty funny to me.  but i am enjoying the process.  i put all of the paper and book together with some embellishments in november and have been adding a picture every day since december started.  i have a small photo printer that i can print 4×6 prints on at my desk which is one of the only reasons i complete this project.  if i had to get them printed elsewhere it would be forever for me to complete it.  which is why i have three very large scrapbooks sitting upstairs no where near caught up.  anywho…

so here is what i have so far.  the only thing i added since i took these photos were some more embellishments which mostly consist of fun christmas stickers (which are so easy to find!).  the only other thing i can say about supplies is the mini book is from joann fabrics and i picked up random scrapbook paper when i would see themed pieces i liked.

our first annual wrapping party

18 Dec

my mom (also known around here as GG or G) and i have started a new tradition.  well i guess it isn’t really a tradition yet since this was the first time we had the wrapping party…but we hope to continue it for years to come which would make it a tradition!

i used to be able to close the baby gate and hide/wrap gifts in my basement.  well now those little kids are smart and can open the gate leading to the basement (at least the ones old enough to get that whole “santa” thing can).  so this year i thought we should hide/wrap gifts at my parents house.  who am i kidding…”we”?  i am not sure in ten years i have ever seen my husband wrap a gift.  i wonder if he knows how?  besides that fact…if I go to my parents house…then I get a whole night of good sleep good food and company!

so as i purchased gifts i sent them to my parents house.  here is some of what we had to do:

above is mine…all neat and separated into piles because that is the only way my brain works.

below is my mom’s.  funny…she is an accountant and one of the most organized people i know, but here is her pile:

so first we got the food all ready so gramps could get his grub on and hide from us the rest of the night so he didn’t have to help (too much…he did do a lot of “get this from downstairs” for us).  we had lots of goodies….

and hey…we threw these in for good measure:

but if i am being honest…we did make a dip too (remember…we don’t really get to have dairy in my house, so when i get a chance to eat the devil food without my little girl around…i go all out!)

there was also a little bit of this:

wrappartywineyes…more wine PLEASE mr. cat (i mean seriously…how cute is that wine holder??)

then we got down to business….

this is how santa rolls in my house.  hey…that dude would go through a lot of tags so he just writes on the paper.  al gore loves (my) santa...lazy eco friendly over here!

then our before piles turned into after piles:

looks like that cat poured me a bit too much wine by the time i got to taking this picture…

but alas…i am not done.  i still have 8 nieces and nephews to wrap for…and all the grandparents.  but its a start…and santa is done!

i also got an early christmas present from my parents…i love rose gold and its a pretty rose gold necklace.  i don’t have a picture of it…but am hoping that’s another part of the new tradition (insert evil laugh for my dad…he isn’t a big early gift giver!)

how is your shopping and wrapping going?  looking for any gifts for the favorite ladies in your life?  what about teachers?  i got these from MiUS for my daughter’s teachers…

Wristlet Key Fob and if i am being honest…i got the polka dot one for myself:)

and don’t forget while you’re there to check out the deal of the day!

lastly…i am still participating in HHDE with heather from twigs, twine + thyme.  yesterday i made these yummy snickerdoodles.

mini scrapbook – december daily – handmade homemade december endeavor

11 Dec

well…another long title from me.  i could never write a novel…pages 1-35 would be the title.  anyway… my friend heather at twigs, twine + thyme is a crafty one to say the least with an etsy shop to boot.  her and i have been friends for so many years, it would be rude of me to divulge how many.  heather is having a “handmade homemade december endeavor” where she discusses something she makes everyday…be it a craft, a gift, and food (yummy food i have to tell you).  now, i am in no way as crafty as heather.  i am a self-proclaimed copy-crafter.  and to make matters worse, things always look way better in my head then they do when i execute them. even so,  i decided to join heather with my december daily mini book.

i used to be a big scrapbooker (is that a word?) with my first baby.  then number two and three came along and time was non-existent to scrapbook.  so then i purchased becky higgins project life books.  i still have them and work on them once a month or so…but really. again, no time.  so heather and i follow a blog where she does mini books.  elise is very crafty with the mini books.  heather has done a few mini books and hers are way more crafty than mine.  but here i go…deciding to do my first mini book with december daily where i document something from the 1st of december to christmas day.  i will be sharing pieces here and there throughout the rest of the month.  my goal was to keep up with it every day…but remember that time issue i have?

here is my page from december 1st…which was pretty full with MiUS’s first trunk show.

here is day two… i have no clue why the photo is so small (keeping it real) but we had breakfast with santa and since my book pages are only 6×6,  i made a mini collage in picasa to add more photos to the page.

here is a future page.  i actually put holes in an envelope.  not sure exactly what i will put in here…maybe a record of what the kids wanted this year, what they actually got,  and maybe even the cost?  wouldn’t that be a killer hoot to look at in the future…

more to come…i have a small pile of photos waiting to join the book.  so…i am now in the handmade homemade december endeavor!  i was going to do a post on the six dozen christmas cookies i made for the baking ministry  i am in at church…actually (horn tooting here) i am a team leader.  however, after telling my family over and over again that i was making the cookies for God (man, i am bad) i FORGOT to take the cookies to the bake sale!  holy cow…guess i am off to confession…and now you know why you are reading about my mini book instead of my cookies…

and if you didn’t know…it is the holidays….and we have a deal of the day going on.  check  out our website for today’s deal!  we have something for every holiday occasion…casual or dressy!
