A Sense of Community (not the TV show)

6 Dec

This holiday season – and the local activities that revolve around it – has me thinking a lot about community.  Dictionary.com defines community as “a social group of any size whose members reside in a specific locality, share government, and often have a common cultural and historical heritage.”   In this instance, I’m mostly thinking of the “specific locality” type.

We live in a relatively small town here in Northeast Ohio. Medina has a population of just roughly 27,000.  However, Medina does a wonderful job encouraging community, and getting people to engage with each other in a civic way.  The downtown has been lovingly preserved, with nice shops, restaurants and events that often draw good crowds.

Medina’s picturesque downtown

We are very fortunate to be in an area where the idea of “community” has been taken so seriously by our town’s leaders, and that there are several organizations that work very hard all year round to ensure it stays that way.  From our Main Street Medina association to the Medina County Historical Society, there are many people who are passionate about keeping our town – and our sense of community – alive and thriving.  I believe this is a concept that tends to feed on itself.  When just a few committed people really work at that sense of community – holding events, preserving history, encouraging downtown commerce – the more other people willingly start to appreciate and work to perpetuate these ideals.

Candlelight Walk 2012

As I’ve now been a resident of Medina for a little over two years, I’ve definitely come to appreciate – and therefore more frequently attend – the events they hold in the downtown area.  From the summer concerts in the park to the Candlelight Walk, I’ve happily enjoyed many activities that are unique to our town.  In turn, I’ve become more committed to wanting the downtown to keep thriving.  I attend the concerts, and make donations.  I patronize the restaurants on our town square.  I shop the wonderful, unique stores we have here.  I attend every Saturday Farmers’ Market that I can, and buy as much of my produce there as I’m able.  I’m really not having to go out of my way – or spend a lot more – to do all these activities; yet my hope is I’m helping to ensure that they will continue long into the future.

Wherever you live, I encourage you to find a way to support your community.  Even if it’s just following the city’s Facebook page or Twitter feed, or eating a meal at the corner café versus the chain up the street, I think everyone can, at least in some small way, help to encourage their local community to thrive.  It just takes a little forethought.

Once you start, however, don’t be surprised if you find yourself getting more involved.  When you see what gems your own corner of the world has to offer, you just might become another passionate person who helps to keep that spirit of community alive.

Another great way to support our wider local community (the good old USA) is to buy USA made products!  Today’s holiday deal at miuscollection.com is sweaters!  All MiUS sweaters are 15% off, and enjoy free shipping on orders over $50.  Use code cozy12 at checkout.

MiUS first trunk show

4 Dec

i have never been to a trunk show…let alone help pull one off.  MiUS’s first trunk show was december 1st in medina ohio.  if you have never been to the town square in medina you are really missing out.  you instantly want to move there (especially around the holidays).  it is beautiful and quaint and has a lot of small stores to shop.  you really get the feel of supporting that mom and pop shop.  and the people are so nice.  for instance, i purchased a watch at the trunk show (details this week) and needed it sized.  i walked across the square to a family owned jewelry shop, they sized my watch and sent me on my way with a “merry christmas”…not a penny was asked for.

it was a lot of work for owner, millie, to put together all the merchandise and get it ready for “show” considering it is an online boutique.  tagging and adding numbers and organizing.  her and a friend drove it over to the shop and we set up saturday morning.  you know when you always think you have enough time but you never do?  that was us.  and man alive…i was missing my second cup of coffee for the morning.  i had to resort to wine around 1230 in order to survive!  we pulled stuff out of bags, lined up sweaters and shirts and dresses, folded jeans and t-shirts, set up rings and watches and handbags.  and even dressed a few mannequins.

we had a designer and an author and some models and food.  in hindsight…i don’t know that we needed all of that.  i personally think the pieces millie has decided to sell, speak for themselves.  of course there were big sellers and popular items.  some items stayed and some went.  we got to visit with friends and meet a few new people.  the object of the trunk show wasn’t to sell everything, but to make people aware of what MiUS has to offer. (and i did get a signed book from kelly! i always like a book signed by the author)

we were crazy at check out and missed a few details, but it was fun and a learning experience and definitely a good girls afternoon.

i really loved seeing all the “made in the usa” tags on tables and hangers.  it is such a great concept.  maybe we didn’t push that enough…millie might of been a little shy to let people know her mission.  i think she should shout it out from roof tops.  i think its something that brings us all together.  no matter your political views, race, gender, sexual orientation, socio-economic status, religion…we all live in this great country and how does it hurt to support it?

are you afraid to shop on-line?  fearful that the size won’t be right (we have free returns) or that the quality won’t be as good as it looks online (it’s better, trust me)…if that’s you, you should come to our next trunk show…or have a small show at your home.  it is fun.  it supports a small business…and did i mention the products rock?

okay…lastly…check out the pic of our spa water!?!?  sooo pretty for the holidays.  not sure if becky knew (when she was thrown the job of getting some water in the container) that the raspberries would sink and the cranberries would float (if she didn’t know it..she should totally lie and say she did!) but how awesome for the season?  i will say it still tasted like water.  maybe have a little platter of lemon to add to it?  or some smashed cranberries?  and yes, ginger, we would have had lemons for the water had i remembered a knife (and a spoon to stir the punch that got stuck in the container…another story for another day)

we are proud of you millie!  keep on keeping on and let’s make this happen!

We are getting so excited…

29 Nov

This Saturday, December 1 will be our very first Holiday trunk show!!  We are super duper excited for this event!!! (Notice the number of exclamation points after that statement 🙂 that adds the tone we are REALLY super duper excited!)  So…let me give you some details!

We will have our ENTIRE inventory for sale at the location.  One of our local designers, Andrea Howell, from Tidal Cool will be joining us as well as local author, Kelley Grealis!  Andrea will be showcasing her winter designs exclusively for sale at MiUS Collection.  Kelley will be signing and selling her novel. PLUS we’ll have models showing you some of the pieces and lovely attendants to help you find your way around the trunks show.   OH…and since we are celebrating, we’ll have drinks (wine) and apps for all to enjoy.   The trunk show will be held at a local store in Medina, Ohio.  The store solely carries made in Ohio goods, which fits right in with MiUS Collection as we are an extension of that theme for our pieces are all Made in USA.  It’s a fun studio, and you will also be able to see and purchase some local art from Homegrown Ohio!  How absolutely great is that!?!?

Here is the invitation with the address and all the other relevant details:

If you are in the area, we hope you can make it and come visit us!!    If not, dont worry, we will be planning other trunk shows in the future.  We will keep you posted.
